ABOUTOur Mission

Our Mission

IASIOS was established in 2021 to address a clear and growing need for standardisation within the field of interventional oncology. Interventional oncology (IO) is transforming cancer treatment using precise, image-guided procedures. These treatments, which include tumour ablation, embolization, and catheter-based therapies, are now applied across the entire spectrum of curative and palliative care. Consequently, IO is increasingly recognised as a core pillar of multidisciplinary oncology, prompting hospitals worldwide to integrate these services into their broader cancer care strategies¹².

This rapid institutional growth is mirrored by significant market expansion. The global IO market is projected to rise from USD 2.18 billion in 2024 to over USD 4 billion by 2032². However, as these procedures become routine and patient volumes increase, global variations in practice become more visible. Such variability can negatively impact patient outcomes, reduce operational efficiency, and weaken trust between care teams and their patients.

Accreditation serves as a vital solution to these challenges, offering a structured framework to ensure consistency and quality. The International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology Services (IASIOS) stands as the only programme in the world focused exclusively on this specialty. Operated by the Interventional Radiology Accreditation Service GmbH (IRAS), this membership-based system provides the evaluation, peer review, and support necessary for continuous quality improvement.

The foundation of this system is the CIRSE Standards of Quality Assurance in Interventional Oncology. Developed by the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE), these standards cover the entire patient pathway, outlining the requirements for delivering IO as a primary clinical caregiver. By providing a practical guide for safe and efficient care, these standards have gained the support of numerous international societies, including European Cancer Organisation.

IASIOS is open to all medical facilities that provide interventional oncology services. This includes centres within larger institutions as well as independent units. Any facility, regardless of size or location, can apply for accreditation.

Objectives

Set Standards

IASIOS is dedicated to setting global quality assurance standards in interventional oncology. Our accreditation system ensures interventional oncologists have the guidelines to practice safely and effectively in a standardised manner as primary clinical care providers.

Facilitate Progress

As interventional oncology grows, it is important to keep developing. IASIOS aims to establish better infrastructure, increase dedicated and trained staff, offer training opportunities, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and more.

Build a Community

IASIOS is a global community of like-minded IOs who are learning from each other and sharing best practices to continuously improve their IO service lines. IASIOS facilitate connections at networking events and workshops and sets a base for benchmarking.

Raise Awareness

IASIOS advocates for IO's position as the fourth pillar of modern cancer care. Raising awareness of IO treatment options among medical providers, hospital administration, and patients will make IO services more accessible to patients.
